LEARNERS is the acronym we use to describe our preschool learning standards using a combination of The Nebraska Department of Education’s Early Learning Guidelines (ELG) with the addition of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) and Montessori influences. It may seem like a lot, but some of the categories overlap. These standards help preschoolers be better prepared for the ever increasing demands of Kindergarten.
LEARNERS Acronym for Preschool Learning Standards: Letter-by-Letter
Learning and playing go hand in hand for little learners. We encourage preschoolers to develop to their fullest potential by providing them with experiences, activities, and ideas to foster their learning and imagination. Here are some preschool activities that could fall under each category.
L for Language, Writing, and Fine Motor
Our learning targets revolve around the “letter of the week.” At calendar time, we go over the letter, its sound, and various objects that begin with that sound. We watch fun learning videos and songs that reinforce the letter of the week. We want preschoolers to be able to identify all capital letters and know their primary sound. Preschoolers need pre-writing skills such as fine motor skills and learning how to properly grip a writing utensil. After these skills, students practice writing their name, and tracing letters.
